Job Description

~~Enterprise Systems (ES) is a unit within the Division of Information Technology at Virginia Tech. Enterprise Systems supports the mission of the university by developing, coordinating, and managing application software systems that provide critical information services for university constituents.

The Academic Applications team within ES is looking for a knowledgeable and motivating Technical Lead. Reporting to the Director of Academic Applications, this position will be the technical expert and guide the team supporting Academic Application’s operations and projects.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide technical leadership to team of application analysts ensuring timely delivery and accurate results
  • Elicit functional requirements using a variety of techniques and tools such as interviews, requirements workshops, business process descriptions, use cases, task and workflow analysis
  • Interpret customer business needs using analytical skills combined with technical expertise to create system requirements and technical specifications
  • Develop test plans and review new and modified systems and programs to ensure all programs and systems meet customer business needs, internal standards, and efficiency requirements
  • Analyze, develop, maintain, and modify complex information systems in a diverse technical environment to ensure accuracy and efficiency
  • Analyze and review the technical infrastructure for existing and new enterprise information systems to ensure the effective utilization of vendor systems, technology standards, and local modifications so that these information systems remain viable and sustainable over time from an enterprise perspective
  • Act as a technical member of ad-hoc teams by providing assistance and expertise and by performing assigned tasks and objectives as part of the implementation, development, and maintenance of enterprise information systems
  • Provide management on matters of technical architecture and infrastructure for all delivered solutions
  • This position will be primarily responsible for providing technical consultancy, expertise, coaching and advice to all Application Analysts on the team. Additionally, a successful candidate will build effective relationships with other groups within Enterprise Systems and work to align architectural solutions with these other groups. This includes collaboration on solution design to ensure fit-for-purpose and end-to-end solutions. Lastly, this position will ensure that solutions delivered are supportable, cost effective, meet strategic business needs, and align with our technical strategy

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Information Technology, Computer Science or related field
  • Significant experience in business process analysis and requirements gathering
  • Demonstrated experience in systems analysis and development of web applications, automated processes, and/or reports that use a relational database system such as Oracle, MySQL, or PostgreSQL
  • Experience using object-oriented development and design methodologies
  • Demonstrated experience using modern development and design methodologies in one or more programming languages
  • Proficient knowledge of SQL and relational database design
  • Experience using build and dependency management tools such as Maven, Ant, Ivy, or Gradle
  • Experience with additional programming languages such as Java/J2EE, Groovy, Ruby, Python, PERL, PHP, .NET, or JSP
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
