New River Computing (NRC) is a local IT services company that provides IT support and monitoring, computer support, disaster recovery, networking and website design services. President Jeff Wynn started working as a private consultant to certain clients in the New River Valley in 1999. In 2010, Jeff, CFO Karen Loferski, and CEO Hansen Ball reorganized and New River Computing, Incorporated, and renewed their focus on building long-term partnerships with local businesses.

“We provide an end-to-end IT department for our clients.  Our services encompass the gamut from help desk to strategic planning and long-term IT investment, encompassing desktop and server management, wired and wireless network design and implementation, onsite and offsite backups, website design and hosting, email management and much more,” said Business Development Manager Shana Williams.  “Small business can be at a competitive disadvantage to larger companies with sophisticated IT departments.  New River Computing is the IT department for our business clients.”

Now, NRC has grown to a staff of 11 and services 1,000 users at 100 local, regional and national businesses. In fact, NRC has had consistent, steady growth – 15 to 20 percent annually – and added three positions just in the past year, according to Williams. “We use a wide range of proprietary automation and event-triggered management to prevent problems from occurring in the first place.  Many problems that do crop up can be remediated without the client even knowing a problem has occurred.  That keeps our clients costs down and productivity up.”

NRC chose to move to the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center (VTCRC) in February 2013 because of the prestige of the research park and a number of support services such as maintenance, facilities, conference rooms, access to the Wikiteria Cafe and Coffeeworks Cafe and proximity to other local fast-growth companies.

NRC stands out in the community as a reliable IT services company because of its fast and nimble service response. Last year, Service Manager Matt Stuart was featured on WDBJ 7 News to talk about cyber-security and offer tips on how to protect yourself from scammers falsely claiming to be Microsoft support representatives. Stuart dealt with this issue firsthand when he helped a client restore their computer after the client had been tricked into allowing a scammer to access their computer. Besides excellent customer service, NRC provides services to local non-profit organizations at deep discounts. “We recently helped upgrade the Community Health Center of the New River Valley and Giles Satellite office to a hosted practice management system and VoIP phone system, with Microsoft’s hosted Office 365, to enhance productivity and streamline operations,” said Williams.

In September 2014, NRC earned a Cloud Accelerate competency from Microsoft in recognition of their Office 365 sales, support, and partnerships. “Microsoft’s Office 365 is a great solution for collaboration, email hosting, and communications.  We have rolled this out for many of our customers, with great success,” said Williams.

Recently, NRC has expanded offerings with hosted phone systems, moved clients to hosted email and collaboration suites (Office 365) and will be sponsoring  WoTech – a Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council community for women in technology.
