Applications Engineer

Network Infrastructure and Services (NI&S) within the Division of Information Technology at Virginia Tech is seeking two qualified Applications Engineer candidates to join the Applications Administration team! We design, deploy and operate enterprise-scale, high-performance computing, and communications networks. As a member of our Applications Administration team, you will contribute to the implementation, management, operation, and support of many of the university’s most important IT services. These services include Virginia Tech’s unified communications and emergency communications systems, security camera systems, centralized logging, IT notifications, and enterprise backups. In this role, you will find exciting opportunities to expand the connectivity of on- and off-campus locations over many thousands of endpoints, supply timely notifications to the university at scale through a variety of communication channels, enhance IT business intelligence and security compliance, and enable real-time support for emergency first responders. Applications Engineer team members will have an opportunity to learn and grow in an environment where all members of the team are expected to:
Provide applications administration and other routine operational tasks
Develop, enhance, and maintain tools or scripts to assist in provisioning, administration, and performance monitoring
Utilize knowledge, assets, and resources to participate in project planning to develop solutions that meet business requirements
Contribute to complex aspects of team projects
Learn new technologies and skillsets, including configuration management and infrastructure automation
Utilize existing policies, processes, and best practices to ensure operational excellence and efficient workflow
Create and maintain up-to-date documentation of services and functions
Be self-motivators with the capacity to work independently with minimal supervision as well as work in a team environment

Required Qualifications

– Limited experience as an analyst or engineer
– Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communications skills
– Basic knowledge of fundamental LAN/WAN technologies and IP protocols to include HTTP, DNS, DHCP
– Experience with Linux shell commands
– Customer-focused attitude with a desire to learn and serve
– Self motivated with ability to work independently under high-level direction as well as the ability to work in a team environment
– Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose routine problems in areas of proficiency using established procedures, paying close attention to detail, and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with customers
– Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

– Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field or related equivalent experience in IT operations
– Experience using log aggregation platforms, preferably Splunk
– Experience using notification systems such as PagerDuty, or OpsGenie
– Experience using metrics and monitoring systems such as Zabbix, Prometheus
– Experience with network applications and experience using Application Program Interfaces (APIs), programming and scripting languages useful for application integration
