Key Role Requirements:

The Construction Inspector will monitor and inspect roadway, structure and bridge, and maintenance construction projects of routine to moderate complexity; ensure contractor compliance through review, interpretation and enforcement of plans and contract documents, monitoring and inspecting field work efficiently and in a timely manner; and preparation of thorough, accurate project documentation. The Inspector will compute daily pay quantities and prepare field adjustment estimates, inform project management of issues that arise in the field and assist in resolution as directed and contribute feedback to Project Inspector for evaluations for all prime contractors and agreed-upon subcontractors. Additionally, this person will conduct materials tests to assure all materials meet requirements set forth in the Materials Manual of Instructions, ensure work zones and other safety requirements and environmental permit requirements are met, and ensure that utility work is documented accurately through daily reports.


Basic Qualifications:

  • 2 to 3+ years of contractor or inspection experience in roadway construction with VDOT desired
  • Knowledgeable in VDOT Road and Bridges specifications and standards
  • OSHA safety requirements on road and bridge construction sites
  • Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry and trigonometry
  • Skill in the use of field engineering and testing equipment, inspection methods and materials
  • Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment and maintain:
    1. Work Zone Traffic Control
    2. Asphalt Concrete Field
    3. ACI Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field
    4. Soils and Aggregate Compaction
    5. Nuclear Safety and Transportation
    6. Pavement Marking and Guardrail Installation
    7. Storm Water Inspection
    8. DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection
    9. OSHA Safety training courses
    10. Flagging
  • Valid Drivers’ License

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience in roadway, structure and bridge, and maintenance construction inspection with a DOT or consultant inspection firm
  • Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge, and maintenance construction methods, materials, standards and terminology
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental, and equal employment opportunity guidelines and regulations as they relate to transportation construction projects
  • Proficient in Site Manager or other project management software
