Job Description

Reporting to the EHS & Facilities Manager, the EHS Specialist is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of all EHS programs. The EHS Specialist develops and maintains EHS training programs and oversees the Safety Program. The EHS Specialist will have direct responsibility for air, water and hazardous materials portion of the Environmental Program.

The EHS Specialist will be a champion of plant safety and regulatory compliance. This position will constantly drive for improvement in the organizations EHS program by using their experience and subject matter expertise to lead others in EHS best practices.

This role will be joining the Kollmorgen team in Radford, VA.  Kollmorgen is part of Altra (AIMC).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following essential duties satisfactorily:

Responsible for implementing and maintaining the following safety programs so that they meet all OSHA/VOSH requirements

  • Emergency Evacuation
  • Electrical Safety
  • LockOut/TagOut
  • Powered Industrial Trucks
  • Respirator
  • Confined Space
  • General Safety
  • Accident Investigation
  • Job Hazard Analysis
  • Hazard Assessments
  • Cross Training Matrix
  • Hazard Communication Program

Responsible for oversight of the following safety programs for which the facility Maintenance Department has primary responsibilities

  • Crane/Hoist inspections
  • Electrical installations
  • Ventilation installation and maintenance
  • Welding Safety

Will oversee the following environmental programs

  • Will have secondary responsibility for Wastewater Program with technical help from the Senior EHS Specialist
  • Will be responsible for completing and submitting SARA 311/312 annual reports
  • Will provide support for (with goal of learning to complete) SARA 313 TRI reports
  • Will have oversight of Hazardous Materials disposal program

Will conduct the following inspections

  • Weekly HazMat/Safety inspection
  • Monthly ventilation survey
  • Monthly General Safety survey
  • Post-kaizen Safety Reviews
  • Will serve as lead for developing and implementing employee safety training; will identify trainers for each program; will conduct training
  • Will serve as lead and coordinator for Safety Committees
  • Participate in kaizen events to provide relevant safety advice
  • Will serve as lead during regulatory inspections when management not available
  • Will have supervisory responsibilities for associate(s) that perform Hazardous Materials Storage Area duties

Education and Experience Requirements

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary:

  • BS in Safety/Engineering related field or equivalent experience
  • 5 or more years' experience as an EHS professional; experience in a manufacturing environment preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, use of gages and measuring instruments
  • Must be motivated, self-directed and able to work well in a team environment
  • Must be able to read and work to blueprints and work instructions
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds
