Hacksburg joined the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center (VTCRC) in February 2014. The company was established to oversee and organize a hackerspace in Blacksburg.
Hackerspaces are shared, community run workshops centered on a common interest in technology. Hacksburg plans to be a resource for the community to foster education and creativity through hands-on exploration of technology, to help spur collaborative projects by providing a space for such projects to grow and to contribute to the open hardware community through their own efforts.
Q & A with Hacksburg’s Andrew Mike
Tell us about Hacksburg’s recent achievements…
In February, we concluded our crowd funding campaign, which was a great success. We had asked for $2,000 to cover startup costs for the space and achieved that goal less than 24 hours after starting the campaign. By the time the campaign had ended, we had received over $4,300 in donations! The success of this campaign showed us how much support there was from the greater community for a hackerspace in Blacksburg. We are grateful to all of our funders who helped make this dream possible and to the rest of their community for their continued support.
Why did you choose the VTCRC for your company location?
The location of the VTCRC is ideal in Blacksburg. It is also accessible via bus, offers excellent parking and is a much better fit for our company’s needs. The VTCRC leadership and staff have been very helpful and supportive of us as we navigated the various pitfalls and legwork involved in starting an organization of this caliber? for that, they have our gratitude.
