At the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, our sponsors play an important role in supporting the growth of our innovation ecosystem. PC Land brings decades of technology expertise and community-focused IT support to companies, entrepreneurs, and organizations across the New River Valley. Through reliable service, cybersecurity support, and hands-on problem solving, PC Land helps innovative companies stay connected, secure, and prepared for growth.
We sat down with William P. Strollo, Owner of PC Land, to learn more about the company, the technology challenges facing growing businesses, and why supporting VTCRC matters to him.

Tell us a little about PC Land and the services you provide.
PC Land is a veteran-owned and operated local electronics and IT repair business based in Blacksburg, Virginia (with an additional location in Fairlawn, VA), serving the New River Valley area since 1994. Located near Virginia Tech at 1333 S Main St, Blacksburg, VA 24060, we specialize in reliable hardware maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and related services for both individuals and businesses. We offer in-store repairs, on-site support, custom PC builds, data recovery, virus removals, hardware/software diagnostics, smartphone and tablet fixes, Wi-Fi setup/repair, network maintenance, 3D printing, and more.
Our services include:
• Repairs for laptops, desktops (PCs and Macs), printers, and other electronics.
• Maintenance like system optimization, data backups, liquid damage cleanup, and anti-virus protection.
• Business-to-business (B2B) support with affordable monthly subscriptions for ongoing IT needs such as network support and installation, cybersecurity, email management, camera and security setup.
What sets PC Land apart when it comes to supporting businesses and organizations?
What sets PC Land apart, especially for businesses and organizations, is our focus on affordable, high-quality, personalized IT support without the high costs of larger providers. We emphasize prompt, doorstep issue resolution, expert knowledge, top-tier professionalism, and treating every system with care for optimal results. As a local veteran-owned shop, we provide seamless, friendly helpdesk service, on-site visits, and tailored solutions, making us a reliable community partner rather than a distant corporate entity. This includes annual maintenance programs customized to specific business needs and strong security measures (e.g., for IRS compliance and financial data protection).
What technology challenges are you seeing most often among growing companies?
Among growing companies in the region, common technology challenges include:
• Outdated hardware/software leading to slowdowns or compatibility issues.
• Network/WiFi reliability problems (e.g., setup, maintenance, or wireless issues in expanding offices).
• Security threats like viruses, data vulnerabilities, or compliance requirements.
• Scaling pains such as managing upgrades, backups, and quick fixes for downtime without dedicated in-house IT staff.
• Balancing cost with performance as companies grow and rely more on tech for operations.
What advice would you give a startup or scaling company when it comes to building a strong IT foundation?
For a startup or scaling company looking to build a strong IT foundation, here’s solid advice based on what local providers like PC Land commonly recommend and address:
• Start with scalable basics: Invest in reliable hardware (e.g., business-grade laptops/desktops) and a solid network setup (routers, switches, wired/wireless) from the beginning to avoid frequent overhauls.
• Prioritize security and backups: Implement regular anti-virus, data backups, and recovery plans early. Downtime or data loss can be devastating for small teams.
• Opt for managed or subscription support: Consider affordable ongoing IT maintenance (like monthly plans) instead of reactive fixes. This provides proactive monitoring, quick response, and expert help without needing full-time staff.
• Plan for growth: Choose flexible solutions, e.g., easy upgrades, cloud integration if needed, and compliance-focused security, to support expansion without major disruptions.
• Partner locally: Work with a trusted regional provider for fast, on-site service and personalized advice, which often saves time and money compared to big national chains.
What made you want to support and sponsor the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center?
For me, supporting the VTCRC is about investing in the future of the community. The CRC isn’t just a collection of buildings; it’s a hub of ideas, talent, and collaboration that strengthens our entire region. As a local business owner, I’ve seen how much innovation happens here and how many entrepreneurs rely on a strong support system to take their ideas from concept to reality. Sponsoring the CRC is my way of contributing to that momentum and helping ensure that founders, researchers, and small businesses have the resources they need to grow.
Technology partners play a critical role in keeping innovation healthy and moving forward. When we are actively engaged, startups and research teams gain access to the tools, security, and support they need to operate confidently. In today’s environment, reliable IT, cybersecurity, and technical guidance aren’t optional; they’re foundational. By being present and involved, we help reduce friction, strengthen resilience, and create an environment where innovators can focus on what they do best: building, experimenting, and scaling new ideas.
What excites you most about being connected to this region’s entrepreneurial and research community?
What excites me most is the energy. The NRV is full of people who are passionate about solving real problems, improving lives, and building companies that matter. Being connected to that community means I get to support founders at pivotal moments, whether they’re launching, expanding, or navigating challenges. It’s inspiring to watch ideas turn into companies and companies turn into employers. And it’s even more meaningful to know that PC Land can play a small part in helping those innovators stay secure, supported, and ready for what’s next all while building a solid company for the future.
What motivates you in your work?
What motivates me is simple: helping people and strengthening the community I’m part of.
Every day, I get to solve problems that make someone’s life or business run smoother whether it’s protecting a company from a cybersecurity threat, getting a family’s device back up and running, or supporting a local entrepreneur who’s building something new. Technology can be stressful or confusing for a lot of people, and I love having a team who brings clarity, trust, and peace of mind to our community.
I’m also driven by the relationships. The NRV is full of hardworking business owners, nonprofits, and community leaders who genuinely care about this region. Showing up for them consistently is what keeps me going. When someone calls PC Land because they trust us, that means something. When we can support a local initiative, sponsor innovation, or help a new business get off the ground, that’s fuel for me.
At the end of the day, my motivation comes from knowing that the work we do doesn’t just fix computers it strengthens connections, protects people, and helps our community grow.
Outside of business, what helps you recharge?
Outside of business, what motivates me is simple: family, friends, and community. I’m driven by the desire to build a good life for my family, to show up for my friends when they need me, and to help make this community stronger and safer.
I manage stress by pushing myself to a tough workout, a long hike, or tackling projects around the house. Those moments help me reset. And I recharge by being around people, whether they are familiar faces or someone I am meeting for the first time. Connection fuels me.
