Virginia Tech Mining & Minerals Department Included in Federal Funding Announcement to Expand Critical Minerals Workforce

The Virginia Tech Department of Mining and Minerals has been named among an elite group of mining schools nationwide selected to receive federal funding aimed at expanding educational opportunities and building a robust domestic critical minerals workforce.

Announced by the White House following a mining roundtable with President Trump at the State Department, the initiative addresses urgent supply-chain vulnerabilities by investing directly in American higher education and mineral technology programs.

Expanding Workforce Opportunities Through the PROSPECT Initiative

Funding will be delivered through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation via the nationwide Providing Opportunities for Specialized Education in Critical Technologies (PROSPECT) initiative—a program backing up to $100 million in federal funding intent.

Key goals of the PROSPECT initiative include:

  • Accelerated Degree Production: Doubling the number of graduates in mining, minerals, and supply chain technologies within the next two years.
  • Student Financial Support: Funding scholarships, financial aid programs, and incentives to lower barriers for students pursuing critical technology fields.
  • Curriculum Modernization: Supporting new academic curricula, state-of-the-art teaching tools, and long-term educational infrastructure.
  • Supply Chain Security: Developing the skilled labor force necessary to support domestic production, processing, recovery, and recycling of critical minerals.

Strengthening Regional Leadership in Energy & Resource Innovation

As one of only 14 premier mining institutions selected nationwide—alongside programs at Colorado School of Mines, Penn State, and West Virginia University—Virginia Tech continues to prove its role as a vital engine for economic and technological growth in the Commonwealth and across the nation.

By training the next generation of engineers and mineral specialists, Virginia Tech will help ensure the United States builds a secure, resilient, and responsibly managed domestic resource supply chain.
